Until German Reunification, the little village of Alt Madlitz lay quietly sleeping and was undoubtedly unaware of the historic significance of its earlier lords of the manor. First mentioned in documents back in the 13th century, it was the residence of ancient noble families who had a decisive impact on the artistic and cultural history of the region. Friedrich Ludwig Karl Finck von Finckenstein (1745-1818) turned the Alt Madlitz manor house into a place of true creativity, frequented by many famous poets and thinkers, such as Ludwig Tieck, Achim von Arnim, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Clemens Brentano and Ewald von Kleist. Dispossessed after the war, the old owner, Count Finck von Finckenstein, and the property and gardens were left to decay.

But now the estate park is looking splendid again, filled with oaks, chestnuts and historic vistas and stretching behind the manor house. The gardens were created by Friedrich Ludwig Karl Finck von Finckenstein, whose heart is buried here, surrounded by three granite stones representing his three children. The restored manor house, which is privately owned, is not open to visitors. The gardens alongside the lake can be extensively explored with and without a guide. After this, it is worth driving to Gut Klostermühle. Here, you can take a lovely circular walk around Lake Madlitz, lasting about an hour, before visiting one of the two restaurants which serve tasty food to bring your trip to a close.
