As soon as you alight from the regional train at Bad Saarow’s historic station, you feel the soothing flair of this relaxed spa town with its elegant Wilhelminian villas. Sophisticated, beautiful houses, ranged like a string of pearls along the bank of Lake Scharmützelsee conjure up the feeling of the 1920s and 1930s, when wealthy citizens strolled along the lakeside promenade soaking up the atmosphere by the lake. The ideal climate and the moor found in 1914 meant that Bad Saarow gained a special reputation for healing moor baths for the treatment of joint pains, stress, rheumatism and disturbances of the vegetative nervous system. The tourist information centre at the station provides information about the town’s highlights. You can set off on a historic voyage of discover with the help of modern technology using an MP3 file, which you should download beforehand.

How to get there:
  • Public transport: Take the S75 (Wartenberg) from Berlin central station to Ostkreuz. From here, continue with the S3 to Erkner, then change to the RE1 (Cottbus) to Fürstenwalde/Spree. Finally, take regional train RB35 to Bad Saarow (around 1.5 hours).
  • Car: From Berlin, take the A100, A113, A10, A12 and the L35 to Bad Saarow (around 1.5 hours)

Route description: The audio guide will take you to the most interesting buildings, including the church in the colony of villas. This is where Max Schmeling his wife Anny Ondra in 1933. The listed ‘Scharwenkahaus’, which today is Brandenburg’s first musicians’ museum, is a particular architectural rarity. You will discover many interesting buildings and their exciting histories. After a 2-hour circular walk, the best way to relax is to take a boat trip on Lake Scharmützelsee, which provides a spectacular view of the silhouette of the town.
