Northeast of Berlin, tucked away in the woods between Werneuchen, Strausberg and Bad Freienwalde, on a huge area of land, you can find the dilapidated remains of an NVA barracks. There is nothing to suggest that the barracks are there from the nearby Harnekop bunker - you would have to know it is there to find it. No one in the village knew that this was one of the best-kept GDR state secrets: the main headquarters of the then Ministry of National Defence.

The bunker is a three-storey protection class A structure. With a floor area of about 63 × 40 metres and more than 7000 square metres of usable area, it is one of the largest bunkers in the territory of the former GDR. It would have provided protection for 500 NVA officers for up to 4 weeks. It was built between 1971 and 1976, and it was permanently ready to be occupied until 1990.

Please register one day in advance to view the structure during opening hours.

Additional dates can be arranged on request.

The temperature in the building is about 7 to 10 degrees all year round and there are many steps and curbs - please wear appropriate clothing and shoes.
