Crypt of the merchant family Johann Conrad Ropert

Ratzdorf, a small village at the confluence of the Oder and Neisse rivers, is known far beyond the country's borders and has much more to offer. The level house on the Oderstrom has become the landmark of the place.

In recent years the crypt has been extensively restored and archaeologically examined. The crypt served as the burial place of the rich and important merchant family Johann Conrad Ropert. As the owner of the royal salt factory, the merchant had considerable influence on the shipping village of Ratzdorf and the salt trade on the Oder. He built the crypt after the death of his son and wanted to use it as a memorial to his family. 7 members of his family and Pastor Öhme are buried there. The coffins and the existing equipment - lion, relief and sculpture - were in a devastating condition. Most of the coffins were rotten, the sculpture was too salty, the lion was dirty and the relief was painted over. In the case of the coffins, old material was saved and new material was added. The relief (16th century) shows a boatman woodcut with the typical death symbolism. The original color could be preserved. The lion (dated around 1680 - 1740) is a sculptural masterpiece. After extensive cleaning, the original gold leaf came to light. Johann Conrad Ropert himself was buried in 1850. The last burial in the crypt took place in 1872.

The Mönchstour and the Oder-Neisse cycle path, which is one of the most beautiful long-distance cycle paths in Germany, lead through Ratzdorf. It's worth taking a little break here. The small cyclist church opened its doors in the summer months. It has a very special story.

Ratzdorf is located directly on the Oder-Neisse cycle path and the Mönchstour.
