A regional focus in the Fontane year of 2019 was on the Seenland Oder-Spree region in the east of Brandenburg. The little village Schiffmühle near Bad Freienwalde in the Oderbruch is home to the house, in which Fontane’s father lived for the last 15 years of his life. His son Theodor visited him frequently. The exhibition is currently being revised for the anniversary year ‘Fontane 200’.

The house was built in the early 19th century. It was Louis Henri Fontane’s residence from 1855 to 1867. Since 1995, the building has been a Fontane memorial site with a permanent exhibition titled ‘Fontane and the Oderbruch’ and a local history parlour.

‘I visited him once a year’ wrote Theodor Fontane about his father, in his autobiographical novel ‘Meine Kinderjahre’. His final visit to the former shipping colony took place in summer 1867. The burial site of Louis Henri Fontane is located in the next village, high above Neutornow in a small hillside cemetery by the little village church.

The tourist information centre of Bad Freienwalde arranges group tours of the Fontane house by request.
