The museum opened in 1988, on the occasion of Leichhardt’s 175th birthday. It has been operated by the Gesellschaft Ludwig Leichhardt e.V. association since 1990. The foundation has 50 members, 7 of whom are actively working at the museum and offering tours. Visitors can see the Leichhardt room that is also used for alternating exhibitions, and a recreation of a school room from 1900, as well as a small local history parlour with regional items. The museum’s exhibition is dedicated to the explorer who remains missing in Australia.

Visits are only possible subject to pre-booking in good time. Please call 0175-9683070 or send and email to Leichhardt-Trebatsch@gmx.de.

The museum is also the starting point of an eleven kilometres long hiking and cycling trail in Leichhardt’s footsteps.
