There are now two locks in Hohensaaten. This is where the Oder-Havel Canal and the River Oder meet. When a new dike was built on the River Oder in the 19th century, a solution had to be found to overcome the height difference between the old and the new Oder. When the first lock was built in Hohensaaten (east lock) from 1853 to 1858, the boats on the River Oder and on the Oder-Havel Canal gained new momentum. Soon, a single lock was no longer enough. West of the old lock, the Finow Lock Hohensaaten (west lock) was built in 1876. It now connects the Oder-Havel Canal to the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthaler waterway parallel to the River Oder.
