The “Borchelt” is the remains of a Slavic fortified castle - one of the most impressive of 50 such castle sites in the region. Although the rampart, which was once made of wood, stone and earth, is no longer intact, it still stands out impressively in the terrain. In the Slavic castle of Raddusch, you can see what this castle once looked like.

These ramparts bear witness to the Slavic settlers, the Lusizi. They lived here from around the 6th to 10th century and farmed and bred cattle. They built fortified castles to protect themselves from the German conquerors.

At the Luckau-Freesdorf castle rampart, a field flora reserve lies between the main rampart and another, smaller one. Experimental agriculture has been practiced here since 1981. In early summer, rare wild herbs such as corncock, adonis, field knapweed and field quail wheat bloom on the small strip of arable land.
