The cavalier of the magazine bastion is significant from a historic and from an urban development point of view. It is part of the fortress that existed from the 16th century through to the 1760s. Few structural traces of the time as a fortress remained after its slighting following the Seven Years’ War. Nevertheless, when considered collectively, these can clarify the structural organisation of the fortress system. The magazine bastion is part of the structure, as well as the fortress tower of the citadel and arch fragments of the official bastion. While it is not fully preserved, it is now the only evidence of the former stronghold that can be experienced in the urban environment. As a functional building of its time that illustrates the fundamental structural principles of fortress construction in Peitz, it is also an important historic document of fortress architecture. The cavalier of the magazine bastion characterises the appearance of the area around the street corner of Mauerstrasse and Gubener Strasse. Together with the other parts of the fortress, it also defines the historic town area. It is now a venue for concerts and visitor lectures take place every Friday.
