The town of Lübben is crossed by three waterways that are of interest to water lovers – the River Berste in the west, the main River Spree in the centre and the flood canal in the east. Four locks and additional weirs regulate the water level between Oberpreewald and Unterspreewald. The lock Kleine Amtsmühle is located on the main River Spree. Other locks include the Große Amtsmühle at the flood canal and the Spittelarche lock at River Berste. At the northern end of the Berste there is another lock. All locks are self-service locks. 

Location: Main River Spree in Lübben

There are numerous differences in height level to be overcome in the canals and rivers between Cottbus in the Oberspreewald and Schlepzig in the Unterspreewald. Assistance is provided by more than 60 self-service locks. Detailed instructions for lock operation are usually to be found directly at each lock. 

The tradition of the Schleusengroschen (“lock penny”) is still maintained here:

children and youngsters frequently carry out the lock operation, reciting a saying as they do so.
