The tower known as the Stolper Turm is the symbol of the town of Stolpe and can now be accessed after its refurbishment in 2008. With an external diameter of 18 metres, it is probably Germany’s widest fortified tower. Visitors can reach the upper floor of the tower via a spiral staircase attached to the outside of the tower. The tower consists of a number of rooms that are open to the public. The impressive tower dungeon is buried deep underground. The vaulted room with its ribbed dome and “fear hole” was the living room. Since 2011, it has housed an exhibition which provides information in three languages about the tower and the history of the town. The tower’s viewing platform provides a lovely view across the Unteres Odertal national park. According to legend, the Stolper Turm is also called the “Grützpott” (porridge pot).
