The protestant church in Herzfelde is a granite church. It is believed to have been built in the 2nd half of the 13th century. The rectangular granite structure has a gabled roof and no steeple. Its windows and portals feature pointed arches. The church bell has a diameter of 73 centimetres. Due to its derelict state, the church could not be used between 1978 and the mid-1990s. The church’s shell, interior, pews and pulpit were be refurbished in recent years, thanks to the support of various sponsors. The 17th century Renaissance altar was inaugurated again in 2008 in a celebratory mass. Funds from the church, the district, the savings bank foundation, the German monument protection foundation and private donations were used to pay for the altar’s restoration that was performed by Ms Scheewe from Stralsund.

The altar with its three-storey top piece features lavishly embellished reliefs in pillar-framed niches. It is a special piece by a sculpture workshop whose altars and other items can be found in St Nicholas’ Church and St Sabine’s Church in Prenzlau, as well as in the churches in Seehausen, Seelübbe, Melzow, Menkin and other churches in the region. A series of postcards is available.

The organ was finally also refurbished in 2011. It is believed to have been built by Albert Lang from Berlin in 1871. The refurbishment was performed by Christian Scheffler’s organ workshop from Sieversdorf. The façade was restored by Birgit and Björn Scheewe.

The church is open for visitors between April and September, on weekdays and at the weekend, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well as by arrangement.
