The local history parlour in Warthe is prominently located in the former blacksmith’s shop on the central village green. The village has an elongated shape and is arranged around a main road. The blacksmith’s shop was operated by the master blacksmiths Schmöker (father and son) from 1885 until 1960. In 1960 it was taken over by the Agricultural Production Cooperative then closed down eleven years later. It was then used as an additional school room, until the village school in Warthe was also closed.

New museum opening in 2026: 

“Stories of Warthe – Objects Tell Their Tales”

What do a blueberry comb, a rusty steel helmet, a Punch and Judy puppet or a charred beam have to do with the history of the village of Warthe?

In the exhibition at Germany’s smallest village museum, 20 objects tell fascinating stories about events in and people from Warthe, and the history of the village.

In addition to the exhibition indoors, there is a plaque at the entrance to the village, behind the bus stop, detailing the history of Warthe, with a focus on the events of April 1945, when Soviet and SS soldiers fought a senseless final battle here and almost all the village’s houses were burnt down.

The objects and stories featured in the exhibition were contributed by residents of Warthe during a storytelling café. Further objects and stories were researched by members of the History Working Group of the Warthe Culture and Local History Association.

The small museum is open in July and August from 2 pm to 5 pm; in the front garden, visitors can enjoy coffee and cake on a donation basis.
