In the 18th and 19th century, Schwedt was among the towns in Brandenburg that had a relatively big Jewish community. A synagogue with a ritual bath (mikveh) was built outside the town wall. Under the brick dome, the structure is almost five metres deep. It was used by orthodox believers to perform washing rituals. The ritual bath and the adjacent temple servants’ house luckily remained intact and could be restored, while the synagogue on the same site did not survive the Nazi era.

The building ensemble of the Jewish ritual bath and the synagogue servants’ house are located on the land that used to be home to the Jewish community. There is a little exhibition about the time when there were still Jewish citizens in Schwedt who had an impact on life in town. The tradition of ritual cleansing is explained in the mikveh. In summer, the garden is used as a concert venue.

Tip

Public tours on Open Monument Day, a visit to the Jewish cemetery in Schwedt, Stolperstein memorials across town, group tours available (please call to make an appointment).
