From 1528 until the expropriation in 1945, Boitzenburg was the ancestral seat of the von Arnim family. For several centuries, the von Arnims were among the most important noble families of the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

Georg Dietloff von Arnim: A man with a strong backbone

The lawyer Georg Dietloff von Arnim (1679 to 1753) in particular stood out as a Prussian public servant. He was the Prussian minister of justice under Frederick William I, but eventually resigned as he did not approve of Frederick’s reform agenda. Frederick II appreciated von Arnim’s sincerity and summoned him back into public service in 1749. Upon learning about his death, the king said that it would be difficult “to find a man as honest as Minister Arnim anywhere in the country that could be entrusted with the post he held.”

Schloss Boitzenburg

The Boitzenburg Castle complex (now a family hotel) is among the biggest in the region. It is situated to the south-west of the town centre. The complex comprises the so-called Oberhaus (upper house), the renaissance castle that has been preserved to this day, and a lower house that has been converted and extended multiple times over the course of the centuries. The island on which the castle is located, was designed by Peter Joseph Lenné around 1840, to resemble a magnificent English style landscape park. On the northern wall of the parish church St Mary's on the Hill, visitors can admire the impressive funeral monument for Georg Dietloff von Arnim that was created by Carl Philipp Glume. Just a few metres from here, there is the monastery mill Klostermühle Boitzenburg. It allows for an insight into life in and even before the Prussian era.
