Experiencing tradition Ascension Day at Neuzelle Monastery

Ascension Day is one of the traditional Christian holidays that is also celebrated in Brandenburg. Always 40 days after Easter - this year it is on 29 May. Would you like to spend this day in a special way? Here is our tip.

The monastery market ‘HANDwerk trifft Kultur’ takes place in Neuzelle Monastery, near the Polish border. On this day, the Neuzell monastery courtyard is transformed into a magnificent marketplace. From 10.00 to 18.00, people who are passionate about their work will come together. Artists, craftspeople and traders show their work and invite you to discover the stories behind the unique artefacts. Here you can experience the diversity of craftsmanship in a special atmosphere.

Music accompanies the day and children have fun with face painting, riding the carousel or discovering their own creativity. If you're feeling peckish, there is a large selection of food ranging from savoury to sweet

Traditions and customs

The ancestors of today's Sorbs/Wends are originally Slavic tribes from the north-eastern Carpathians. They arrived in the area between the Baltic Sea and the Ore Mountains around 1500 years ago. Today they live in Upper and Lower Lusatia and in the Spreewald.

Rafting also has a long tradition. Together with timber processing, it used to be an important part of the economy. Tools and techniques relating to raft and boat building can be seen in the Oderberg Inland Navigation Museum. In Lychen, the rafting museum provides an insight into the life of the raftsmen and you can experience the work on a raft on a raft trip.
