Parlow is some five kilometres north of Joachimsthal in the heart of Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve. Around the village, you can not only see cranes passing through but, with a little luck, you can also see them during the mating season. From the observation tower on the silted up Lake Flachsee with its valuable patches of moorland, Lake Mellnsee, which is no longer visible today, hoofed game, grassland birds and birds of prey can also be seen.

If the water level is right on the meadows, large flocks of geese also stop off to rest here. In spring, you can hear the bitterns that lice hidden in the reeds.

The village of Mellin used to be where the observation tower is now, which is why the tower is also known as Mellin observation tower. The village’s former graveyard is not far from the tower. There is a memorial stone to Franz Neumann (1798-1895), the founder of theoretical physics. He was born in Mellin.

Location: Between Parlow and Glambeck

Programmes and extras: dogs are welcome
