The canoe tour along the Finkow Canal leads through an idyllic landscape. Along the way, canoeists gain interesting insights into the industrial, cultural and architectural history of this historic waterway. There are twelve manual locks along the route alone, starting out along the “Langen Trödel” – a particularly attractive and unspoilt route section of the trip – to the former fishing village of Marienwerder and on through Finowfurt and Eberswalde to the Niederfinow boat lift.

The imposing lift overcomes a height difference of about 36 metres and passing through it is a very special experience and the highlight of the canoe tour. The Finow Canal can also be travelled in the opposite direction, so the start and finish are interchangeable.

Length / duration: 42 kilometres (2-3 days)

Start: Liebenwalde
Finish: Niederfinow boat lift

How to get there:
  • Public transport: Take the RE 5 (Stralsund) from Berlin central station to Oranienburg. From here, take Bus 803 (Liebenthal) to Liebenwalde (about 1 hour).
  • Car: From Berlin via the A 114, A 10 and L 21 to Liebenwalde (about 1 hour).

Route: Liebenwalde, Zerpenschleuse, Ruhlsdorf, Marienwerder, Schorfheide district of Finowfurt, Eberswalde, Niederfinow district of Stecherschleuse, Schiffshebewerke Niederfinow

Nautical information: Please note the lock opening times on the tour. Canoeists can also carry their boats around the locks, whereby the green landing stages before and after the locks serve as exit and entry points. Canoes have right of way when using the green jetties!
