The Gothic brick basilica in its current form dates from 1333. In 1542, the first Protestant service took place in the church during the Reformation. Comprehensive renovation of the church building took place in 1876 – architect Hermann Blankenstein brought out the original character in greater detail. The result was that the basilica was similar to the nearby Chorin monastery church. The striking tower spire was build according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler.

A special feature of the church is the terracotta statues in the portals – they are the oldest of their kind in Brandenburg. In the church, there is also a bronze baptismal font dating from the 14th century, a richly decorated carved altar dated 1606 and an organ dated 1783. Devotional figures and a fresco of Christopher date from the 16th century. The choir is flooded with light by numerous high, pointed windows.

The church is part of the “Offene Kirchen” (Open Churches) initiative. Current opening hours can be found on the parish website. As a historically important building, the church is a stop along the European Route of Brick Gothic.
