This town hall building complex consists of two parts – the new and old town hall. The old town hall was built in a Baroque style in 1775 for the cloth manufacturers Heller, and was first used as the town hall in 1825. The municipal coat of arms, created by Potsdam sculptor W. Koch in 1866, hangs over the main entrance.

The new town hall with its elaborate architecture and artistic design is a typical example of the Renaissance reception that was favoured when building town halls. It was constructed between 1903 and 1905 following plans made by Berlin architects Köhler and Kranz. The Renaissance Revival representation rooms, the wall paintings, and the extensively worked sandstone handrails on the interior of the building are especially impressive.
