The iron lion at the Löwen-Brunnen fountain is a work by sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch, one of Germany’s most important and most successful classical sculptors. Rauch cast the imposing lion sculpture in 1836 at Berlin’s Royal Foundry, creating an exemplary work in cast-iron art.

The wooden fountain system was first built in 1729 by local carver Hattenhasel.

It is here on the market square that new students in Eberswalde are welcomed once a year. This event, known as the Studentenempfang (or ‘student reception’), features beer from the fountain.
