The peninsula of Pehlitzwerder with its ancient trees and a campsite seems to exist outside of civilisation. This is the location of the ruined remains of the Mariensee Monastery, an offshoot of Lehnin Monastery that was never completed. It may have been the swamp landscape that caused the Cistercian monks to break off their building work, and instead their monastery came into being a few kilometres away in Chorin.

The writer Theodor Fontane was impressed by the scenic beauty and the historic relevance of the peninsula, and he recounts his visit to Pehlitzwerder and the history of Mariensee Monastery in Part 3 of his ‘Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg’. To this day a Slavic protection wall as well as remains of the monastery walls testify to the peninsula’s eventful history.
