Unfortunately, not much remains of the former, enormous chemical factory. In the family garden, the old “Roland” steam locomotive that used to be used to transport goods can be seen.

Eberswalder Linoleumwerke was founded in 1894 by Adolf Frentzel and was one of the first linoleum works in Germany along with Delmenhoster Linoleumwerken, which went into operation in 1882. The range was constantly being developed: In addition to single-colour flooring, it also included colourful, printed patterns which, for example, imitated flowery wool carpet or parquet flooring. In 1947, VEB Chemische Fabrik Finowtal was built here, which produces an extensive range of chemicals until the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

Some Eberswalde natives still get it today: the typical smell of spruce needles that surrounded the factory in the 1980s. The intense perfume, isobornyl acetate, was used in bath products in particular, for example “Badusan” bubble bath, which was very famous in the GDR. And it was also imported from India as an important component of incense stick. The range included camphor, acetylcellulose (artificial silk) and carboxymethylcellulose, which improves the consistency of ice-cream and mayonnaise and slows down the drying out of baked goods. Its adhesive force is also significant. Do you remember “Tepetenkleber Zellin” carpet glue? This legendary GRD product was also made of the versatile chemical.
