Admittedly, though Theodor Fontane did indeed cross this bridge, he did so in Berlin. The bridge was built in Berlin in 1828, and around this time it’s said that Fontane even got engaged to Emilie Rouanet-Kummer there. In 1895, however, owing to the constantly increasing volume of traffic in the ambitious metropolis, the bridge was dismantled and brought to Liepe. It’s still not quite clear exactly which part of the bridge was brought over to Liepe, but what is clear is that it came to Eberswalde in 1913. It was decommissioned from the 1930s and was declared a protected monument in East Germany.
