The Schorfheide hunting lodge is located in the middle of the Schorfheide. It has served as the hunting ground to those in power since the 19th century. These included the German Emperor Wilhelm II as well as Friedrich Ebert, the social democratic first president of the Weimar Republic. Hermann Göring, who had been appointed Reich Forestry Master and Reich Hunting Master during the Nazi era, also went hunting here. The Schorfheide was assigned to him for personal use in 1933. Göring built his Carinhall hunting lodge there, which he had blown up towards the end of the war because he did not want it to fall into enemy hands.

During the GDR era, Erich Honecker was given two thirds of the Schorfheide as his hunting area. The remaining area was shared among other high-ranking SED officials, such as the Minister for State Security Erich Mielke and the Economic Secretary of the Central Committee Günter Mittag.

Those in power used the private atmosphere of the hunt for arrangements with their guests. It allowed them to talk to guests, prepare contracts and deepen personal relationships outside official appointments. During GDR times, the Soviet heads of state and party leaders and other representatives from the Eastern Bloc were invited, and from the 1970s onwards, so were West German politicians and business representatives.

An exhibition featuring many pictures, objects and films in the Groß Schönebeck hunting lodge tells of the history of the link between hunting and power.
