Its roof shimmers with the green of Lake Werbellinsee and, like in a fairy tale, it stands at the southern tip of the lake where once the Ascanian castle of Werbellin is said to have stood. It is believed to have been built between 1211 and 1215 under Margrave Albrecht II. Remains of a wall and weapons were found during excavation work on the canal in the 18th century.

It was the idea of the regional poet Friedrich Brunold from Joachimsthal to build a tower in this historical place. Prince Carl of Prussia took up the idea and entrusted the master builder Oskar Büschner from Eberswalde with its implementation. Büschner designed the round tower made of field stones, the balcony and the brick crenellation.

It was inaugurated in 1879. The tower and the castle have been under monument protection since 1974. In 1991 foresters from Schorfheide renovated the tower and it was subsequently reopened as an observation tower.

In 2009 the ARD channel used it as a film location for the fairy tale Rapunzel.

Please note: You can pick up the key to the tower from the Café Wildau, which is only a 5-minute walk away, has a key to the tower during opening hours.
