When the railway line was built, the desire of the citizens of Groß Köris for a church of their own grew stronger. The Prussian government building officer Georg Büttner made a sketch for this sacred building from 1907 onward – it was to be his last. He died in 1916 during the First World War. After completion of the drawing, it took another seven years before the foundation stone was laid, and the church was dedicated on June 14, 1916.

The church, which was built in the “homeland” style and painted in brilliant colours inside, came under heavy bombardment in the Second World War. It was only possible to repair the damage years later. Water leaking in had cause immense damage. In addition, the interior paintings had been painted over in a single colour. It was completely restored in 2012. Today, visitors are overwhelmed by the wealth of art nouveau colours and ornamentation of the restored interior paintings and the starry sky on the vaulted barrel ceiling. The organ was built by G.F. Steinmeyer & Co.

The church is part of the “Open Churches” initiative; please book in and obtain the key from Mr & Mrs Stiehl, Lindenstrasse 9, telephone +49 33766 41227.
