The municipality of Schönefeld in the Dahme Lake District is admittedly often associated with the airport of the same name. However, Schönefeld was mentioned in documents as far back as the 14th century and since then has gradually developed two different faces: On the one hand, historical buildings such as the late Romanesque boulder church are positioned next to the idyllically-situated horse farm, while on the other, just a few hundred metres away, numerous branches of well-known companies and shops are gathered together in the Waltersdorf business/retail park. As a popular attraction, it attracts thousands of shoppers from Berlin and Brandenburg to Schönefeld every year. This contrast between rural idyll and urban hustle and bustle is also reflected in a highly acclaimed German feature film that caused a sensation at the Berlinale 2020.

The 2019 film "Nackte Tiere" (Naked Animals) was shot on the edge of Schönefeld. Ultimately the location scout sought out meaningful film locations that corresponded to the visual language of the film and thereby took on an emotional function. Shooting on the edge of a field or a tree-lined avenue can suggest freedom, but also disorientation. Thus, the film is also about a story about five young protagonists who are looking for stability and whose fates seem to be closely interwoven. This much-praised Berlinale entry isn't the only film to have been shot in Schönefeld, however.

"Das schönste Mädchen der Welt" ("The Most Beautiful Girl in the World"), released in cinemas in 2018, was also partly shot in Schönefeld. On a school trip to Berlin, rebellious Roxy meets supposedly shy Cyril. While Cyril instantly falls in love with the new classmate, Roxy focuses on another classmate. The German federal authority for evaluating and rating film and media rated the film particularly highly, and no wonder, since the film conveys the message that inner values are more important than external appearances.

Besides fascinating film locations, Schönefeld also has other interesting places that are worth visiting. For example, at the "Keidel-Ranch" horse farm both beginners and advanced riders can admire the vastness of Schönefeld on horseback. For flight enthusiasts, a visit to the Hurricane Factory is a must. There the largest wind tunnel in Germany makes the dream of flying come true.
