Lake Köthen lies on the western edge of the Lower Spreewald, at the foot of the Krausnicker Berge. The village of Köthen, a district of Märkisch Buchholz, is situated on the southern shore. In particular, the silted-up area of Lake Köthen lies within the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. Use of the lake is subject to strict regulations governing the nature reserve and the biosphere reserve.

To access the water, a permit is required to use selected paths in the state forest leading to the association’s and contract waters (forest access permit).

Eel, perch, bream, grass carp, silver bream, pike, carp, marble carp, asp, roach, tench, silver carp, zander
