This circular trail runs through a varied landscape along the River Dahme, by dry grasslands and dunes dotted with pine trees, to wetland and moorland forests and on to the moorlands of the Langes Luch. The Brandenburg Nature Conservation Fund Foundation has been active in Langes Luch since January 2016 with the “LIFE Feuchtwälder” project. From the historic forestry office in Hammer, built in 1737 by Prince August Wilhelm to manage the royal forests and now operating, with brief interruptions, for 280 years, the path runs past the 500 year-old “Hermsdorfer Mühle”, which was originally built as a water mill. The mill has survived as a ruin and the Hermsdorf weir regulates the water level of the River Dahme here. In the sandy dry grasslands, Hereford cattle sometimes graze on a meadow covering around ten hectares. It is easy to walk around the meadow. If there are no animals grazing, the gates can be used to cross the grazing land.

Langes Luch nature experience: Langes Luch is a swampy lowland, embedded in a widely varying dune landscape. It was formed at the end of the last Ice Age. The landscape is characterised by alternating elevations and lowlands, wet and dry areas, with and without vegetation. Moorland and meadow forests and dry, sandy grasslands are found here: Rare habitats that are home to an amazing diversity of species. The over 250-year-old Hermsdorfer Mühle weir drains the Langes Luch in the direction of the River Dahme. Rising and standing water in the watercourse helps with the development of the moor.

Animal and plant species found here

Dry sandy grasslands: Small pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis), sand thyme (Thymus serpyllum), sand lizard (Lacerta agilis), blue-winged grasshopper (Oedipoda caerulescens)

Moorland forest: Round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), bog cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos), moor frog (Rana arvalis), large copper (Lycaena dispar)

Meadowland forest: Broad-leaved enchanter’s nightshade (Circaea lutetiana), lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria L.), kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), beautiful demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo). Further information about the various natural landscapes is provided on the information panels along the way.
