The early works of the painter, graphic and object artist Michael Thomas Sachs, who was born in Annaberg-Buchholz in 1962, are characterised by a fundamental sense of authority arising from objects found by the artist, such as archaeological items that had lost their value in the time of a throwaway society. Michael Thomas Sachs recognised box locks that had taken on a patina, trimmings, spools, wire mesh, porcelain, machinery components or packaging materials as historic memorabilia. He used these items to install a new and fascinating programme of a bulky picture object that is rich in structures, material areas and colours. The artist creates new artistic realities in an ever changing world.

With this work, Michael Thomas Sachs does not intend to protest against the grotesque amounts of waste produced nowadays, but rather to demonstrate compassion for the unspent qualities of old things, and to build a new aesthetic world of seemingly absurd gems. The robust frame of the piece is covered in basic geometric patterns that counterbalance the multi-part picture in an astonishingly confident way.

Carlfriedrich Claus from Annaberg recognised the otherness of Sachs’ work and decided to support him. The same is true for Carl-Heinz Westenburger, who was the artist’s most important teacher that shared a fundamental sense of seeing and experiencing art and nature with him.

Areas of activity:
  • Assemblages
  • Collages
  • Illustrations
  • Graphic art
  • Object boxes
  • Work with children in the painting school “Experimental Art”
