Visitors are guaranteed to experience something marvellous and not just when the roses are blooming. The unique garden offers a new spectacle every month. Totally committed to the Art Nouveau idea of an overall work of art, a garden landscape started being created at the start of the 20th century. Today it is a garden monument inviting visitors to stroll at a leisurely pace through the garden. Anyone with an interest in gardening and horticulture cannot fail to be inspired by the 200 different varieties of rhododendron and the precisely laid out rockery.

Around 1900, the manufacturer Wilhelm Marx built a country-style villa on the Badstrasse on the edge of the Old Town of Herzberg. From the outset, his aim was to design the surrounding garden as a botanical collection as rich as possible in varieties. Today, in Herzberg, people usually refer to his garden as the “Botanic Gardens”, a term fully guaranteed to do justice to the creator’s aspirations.

Following committed renovation work in the aftermath of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, this horticultural gem is once again in a good condition, although the poor level of public funding is starting to show. The path over a small bridge leads directly to a modest villa – still abandoned giving the complex an almost bewitched character.

With more than 350 trees and shrubs and some 600 herbaceous plants, the garden blossoms virtually all year round: the witch hazel at the end of the year is soon followed by winter jasmine and Christmas roses, then the early herbal blossom under the cornelian cherry and different varieties of honeysuckle. A highlight of the garden is without a double the early summer blossoming of the rose bushes.

Guided tours available on request.
