There were nearly one hundred tanneries in the town of Kirchhain in the heyday of the tannery trade around 1900. The tawer museum is today located in an old tannery dating from 1753. The permanent exhibition presents a technical display of the tannery trade and exhibition of the tawer trade and focuses on the development of the tannery and leather industry. In addition to a collection of leather and hides from all over the world, a cobbler’s workshop and tavern from the 19th century are on display as well as a collection of tinware from Kirchhain and Doberlug.

The technical exhibition at the tawer museum is located in a former tannery not far from the main building. Industrial leather production is illustrated here with the aid of a complete production line.

Guided tours are available by prior arrangement. Interested parties can also use the library where there are books on leather production and processing technology as well as on the regional history.
