European history was written near the town of Mühlberg/Elbe. The armies of a Catholic alliance under Emperor Charles V met the Protestant Schmalkaldic League under the command of the Saxon Elector Johann Friedrich met here in 1547. This event, which determined the course of the Reformation, forms the main focus of the museum. The museum which joins the ranks of Central German reformation sites, also carries the European Cultural Heritage seal. Visitors will learn here why Emperor Charles V reached the peak of his power in Mühlberg and Spaniards swam through the River Elbe in April. Visitors should also take time for a tour of the medieval double town. The former Cistercian convent, which with its imposing monastery church, Abbess’ house, refectory, gate house and the Provostry, has been retained as a closed complex.

“Where Prussia kisses Saxony”: four museums showcase the cultural landscape of the Elbe-Elster. The region surrounding the Elbe and Elster rivers in the south-west of Brandenburg offers a varied and exciting cultural landscape. For centuries it was Saxon, but then fell into Prussian hands after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Incidentally, you can also hear that you are travelling in the Saxony-Brandenburg border region: to the south of the border, affectionately known locally as the “Eierschecke” (Egg Custard) border because of the famous local cake, the dialect is comfortably Saxon, while to the north it becomes much clearer and Prussian. The Elbe-Elster Museum Centre showcases aspects of the history of the Elbe-Elster-Land in four different buildings. You can find more information at www.museumsverbund-lkee.de.

Easy access by public transport, bus lines 433/437 from Riesa, 536 from Falkenberg / Bad Liebenwerda – Koßdorf, 565 from Bad Liebenwerda. The museum is only about 300 metres (four minutes) walk from Mühlberg bus station.
