When G. F. Wittke founded his material, tobacco, cigar and distillation business in 1850, he did not suspect that it would become the centrepiece of the Singers and Merchants Museum in the Elbe-Elster Museum Centre in Finsterwalde. The originally furnished shop with its early-19th century interior and goods and advertising from the first half of the 20th century is still today the epitome of the small local corner shop. A chemist’s shop selling GDR products, historic vending machines and advertising signs as well as old Wittke coffee roasters continue the themes of retail and advertising. Of course, the museum also includes the famous local Finsterwalde singers for which the town is famous: The museum tells the history of the creation of the famous folk song from the early 1900s and illustrates the impact of the song. The “Finsterwalde Chorwurm” exhibition on singing and music showcases the history of community singing from the Middle Ages right up to the present day. The exhibition is peppered with exhibits on the history of singing and music and vividly brings to life the integrating power of singing.

Where Prussia kisses Saxony

Four museums present the cultural landscape of the Elbe-Elster-Land

In the south-west of Brandenburg, the region on the rivers Elbe and Elster offers an exciting and varied cultural landscape. For centuries it was Saxon, but then fell into Prussian hands after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Incidentally, you can also hear that you are travelling in the Saxony-Brandenburg border region: to the south of the border, affectionately known locally as the “Eierschecke” (Egg Custard) border because of the famous local cake, the dialect is comfortably Saxon, while to the north it becomes much clearer and Prussian. The Elbe-Elster Museum Centre showcases aspects of the history of the Elbe-Elster-Land in four different buildings.

You can find more information at www.museumsverbund-lkee.de.

The museum can be easily reached by public transport. From Finsterwalde railway station, head towards Finsterwalde Südpassage.
