The Saxon pearl of Brandenburg. Schloss Doberlug castle is a memorial site for the passage of some parts of Saxony to the Kingdom of Prussia. The magnificent castle was once owned by the Electors of Saxony and is one of the most impressive testimonies of Saxon and Prussian history. Visitors experience an exceptional Renaissance building built on the same lines as one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries.

The huge four-wing renaissance complex with towers and characteristic spire lights was completed in the 17th century. It is surrounded by a dry moat. The richly decorated gables, two stair towers in the courtyard and a stone gallery are important architectural details.

The special feature of the castle is that its construction was based around “a year”. A building style that reflects the characteristics of a year. There was originally one tower for a year, four wings for the four seasons, twelve gables for the twelve months, 52 pinnacles for the 52 weeks of the year and about 365 windows for the number of days in a year.

The monastery church and the refectory of the former Cistercian monastery are located in the immediate vicinity of the castle.

Architectural era: Baroque (1756)

State of the castle: extensively renovated

Floor area of castle: about 1,600 square metres

Part of the castle ensemble: Monastery church, refectory

The tourism association Elbe-Elster-Land e.V. are located in the castle.
