From the history of the zoo: At the beginning of the 1970s, a citizen of Herzberg kept sheep on his property on Kaxdorfer Weg in addition to dwarf rabbits, and many walkers and children liked the sight of them. The residents, on the other hand, were disturbed by the bleating and the smell of the animals, and the complaints caused the city to ban the enclosure and made an area in Grochwitzer Park available for it. With ponies, guinea pigs and ornamental fowl, more animals were added and the park regained interest among the citizens. Companies and citizens supported the city with construction work or donations of animals.
