The Dominican monk Johann Tetzel unscrupulously sold letters of indulgence in Jüterbog 500 years ago: Sinners were forgiven for cash and saved from purgatory. Martin Luther found this abhorrent: In 1517, he nailed his 95 theses to the castle church in the neighbouring town of Witttenberg – the beginning of the Reformation. The bicycle tour along the popular Flaeming-Skate and the old pilgrimage route leads to scenes of the selling of indulgences and the Reformation and on to Kloster Zinna. Original letters of indulgence, Chranach’s purgatory altar and the Tetzel box can be seen in Jüterbog.
