Gommern Castle was first mentioned in documents under the name "Guntmiri" in the Charter of the Diocese of Brandenburg in 948. Founded on an old Slavic fortress, the castle was of strategic importance to the area east of the Elbe. After being rebuilt in 1579, it served as a hunting lodge for the Saxon princes and later in the 19th and 20th centuries as an administrative office, prison detention centre and a social care home and hostel for apprentices. The castle complex steeped in history is still surrounded by a closed ring wall and a castle moat. The mighty “Zwiebelturm” (onion tower), which can be seen from far and wide, is one of the town’s landmarks. The barrel vault, cellar, castle keep and gate form are well worth seeing, making history palpable.
