The church was built between 1892 and 1894 based on a design by Berlin architect Friedrich Adler; the German Kaiser and his wife were strong supporters of this church building. St. Jakobi is by far the dominating silhouette of Luckenwalde, but the church itself is no longer used for regular Sunday services. The friends’ association organises numerous cultural events that serve to revitalise and preserve the building. The Protestant parish uses the church for special services such as at Thanksgiving and Christmas, when large numbers of visitors are expected.

In 2014, the tower of the church was renovated under the programme Stadtumbau Ost. The construction project cost about a quarter of a million euros and was financed in equal parts by federal, state and municipal subsidies. This has put the tower back in order for the next 50 years.
