The St. Johanniskirche church in Luckenwalde was converted in the second half of the fifteenth century from a simply aisle-less church made of fieldstone to a double-naved hall church with a cross vault. It is assumed that the nearby Zinna Monastery from the year 1170 was the model for most of the church buildings in the local region. The same is true for the St. Johanniskirche. In accordance with the rules of the Cistercian monks, the sacred building was not given a church tower, but rather a small ridge turret that stands atop the church building to this day. The bell tower is separate, and is also known as the ‘Market Tower’ (Marktturm). It can be visited as part of guided tours.

The painting inside was completed at the start of the sixteenth century, before the Reformation. The colourful paintwork was uncovered in 1901 beneath an old coating. This is how, for example, the eastern pillar features a representation of St Sebastian, while the triumphal arch depicts the family tree of Jesus. The five medieval wooden figures in the altar shrine and the sandstone baptism are especially eye-catching.

Information and keys at the parish office directly opposite the church, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m., every first Thursday in the month also from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., telephone: +49 3371 610925
