Film and television do not always use the big and well-known locations. Sometimes smaller places and sights play a major role in films and series. This was the case with the Südwestkirchhof Cemetery in Stahnsdorf. And it is certainly worth a visit. Situated just on the edge of Berlin, it is Germany’s second largest cemetery and the last resting place of people, including Heinrich Zille, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Rudolf Breitscheid and Manfred Krug.

It is an important cemetery in terms of art history and cultural history, and takes visitors on a journey through German history. This aspect was a perfect fit for the makers of “Dark”, the first German-language Netflix series. After all, the grim mystery thriller series takes places in several layers of time in which the lives of four small-town families begin to unravel. Alongside the Südwestkirchhof Cemetery in Stahnsdorf, the producers found many other locations in Brandenburg, including the Nuthetal valley near Zossen, and also in Sacrow and Kladow. The red house belonging to the Kahnwald family, and thus also the main character Jonas, played by Louis Hofmann, is also located in Brandenburg, in a small village in the Ruppiner Lakes district to the north of Berlin.

In 2012, several scenes for the film "Sein letztes Rennen” (English: Back on Track) with Dieter Hallervorden were filmed in Stahnsdorf. In the film he plays a once great marathon runner, the gold medal winner in Sydney in 1958. Now, years later, he is living with his wife in a home for the elderly but does not want to come to terms with this fact. So he puts on his running shoes and starts training for his last marathon.

The production teams of other television series, including “Der Kriminalist", "Letzte Spur Berlin (English: Disappeared - The M.P.U.) (both ZDF) or the daily soap “Gute Zeiten – Schlechte Zeiten” (English: Good Times – Bad Times" (RTL) regularly shoot in Stahnsdorf and in the neighbouring town of Kleinmachnow.
