The Wurzelberg hiking trail leads through the wilderness area of the Brandenburg Natural Landscapes Foundation. Follow the Wurzelberg hiking trail through pine forests straight into a terrain that currently irritates and fascinates at the same time with its strange steppe or desert character. Everything is changing here, and an exciting development is taking place. From August to October the heath can bloom here. Let your gaze wander and your soul dangle. The "Wilderness Thought Walk" provides some inspiration with quotes from writers and philosophers. From the elevation of the Wurzelberg you have a fascinating view of a large inland dune as a relic of the last ice age and of the wilderness development areas. During a leisurely picnic at the rest area, you can enjoy the view and identify your own location on the overview relief. The trail is 7.4 km long in total or can be shortened to a 5.5 km hike with a small loop at the dune.

Start/finish: The Wurzelberg Hiking Trail starts and finishes right by the main road 101n at the roundabout for the road An den Ziegeleien in Luckenwalde.

How to get there (car, parking, public transport):
  • Car: Take the B101 at Luckenwalde opposite the junction for the road An den Ziegeleien
  • Parking: A few parking spaces right by the entrance, before it there is parking on the road
  • Train: The hiking trail is signposted from Luckenwalde station, Berliner Platz (approximately 2.5 kilometres from the station to the start of the hiking trail). Access via Anhaltstrasse/An den Ziegeleien; the hiking trail starts shortly after crossing the B101

Designated route / Please note:

This site is a former military training area. Please stay on the signposted paths, which are guaranteed to be free of ammunition. Outside of these designated routes it is possible that the surface could present dangers and health hazards, particularly from ammunition or ammunition parts. We recommend solid footwear or an off-road bicycle for crossing the sandy dirt roads. Riding is not permitted on the paths. Particularly on hot days we recommend that you take sun protection and enough to drink.

Maps/Literature:

There is an overview leaflet on the Wurzelberg Hiking Trail and other hiking trails in the Jüterbog wilderness area on the Brandenburg Wilderness Foundation’s website.

For orientation in the area, see for example the topographical leisure map for the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park, ‘Topographische Freizeitkarte 1:50,000 Naturpark Nuthe-Nieplitz’, by the organisation Landesvermessung und Geobasisinformation Brandenburg (only available in German).
