The oak tree was in fact planted to mark Martin Luther’s 400th birthday and graces this memorable square.

During the period of the Reformation, Lutheran priest Thomas Schneidewein used the former building fro his sermons. However, after he helped the Danish Princess Elisabeth to flee in 1528, he vanished without a trace. Because Elisabeth had converted to Protestantism, she fled from her husband and prince on religious grounds. The Schneidewein memorial stone is still a reminder of the uncertain fate of the preacher Thomas Schneidewein.
