Luckenwalde has the oldest lending library in the state of Brandenburg; it has existed since 1846. The station building was extensively rebuilt and renovated, and since 2008 Luckenwalde’s municipal library has found its new home here, directly linked to the station. Since the railway and the station were important in Luckenwalde’s past but the station building was doomed to be demolished, an appropriate function was sought. The construction of the city library breathed new life into the station, reviving its spirit. Through the EU funding project URBAN II, the project “Library in the Station” was developed by the architects’ bureau “raumbewegung” back in 2004. In 2005, the consortium Wronna, Feldhusen, Fleckenstein won the architectural competition and was able to start planning in 2006.

The extension of the children’s and youth library is particularly striking; spatially tilted in two axes on the west side, this structure establishes a fresh connection with its urban surroundings.

Information on the adjacent railway station: In 1841 Luckenwalde was linked to the Berlin Anhalt railway. This was the due to the efforts of the Privy Councillor of Commerce von Carl. As Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Berlin-Anhalt Railway, he ensured that the route was not laid via Treuenbrietzen as planned, but via Luckenwalde.

The first train ran on 21 April 1841. In 1917, the railway line was laid on a high embankment, which meant that there were no more railway barriers in the town area and it was possible to develop the area behind the railway. Today, the regional express takes about 38 minutes for the route from Luckenwalde to Berlin central station.
