The Schubertian Scheunenwindmühle Saalow barn windmill is unique worldwide. It was built around 150 years ago by Johann Traugott Schubert in Podemus, a small village near Dresden. The mill has only been in Saalow, a village district of the municipality of Am Mellensee, for about 20 years.
Its unique feature can be seen from the design of the mill alone. The barn windmill does not have a typical wind wheel with 4 blades – instead the wind wheels are permanently installed in the mill building itself. The mill building is a half-timbered building and the mill engineering forms a single entity with the building, giving the mill its unique mode of operation. When closed, the half-timbered building resembles a simple barn, hence its name.
