The Heiz-Kraft-Werk heating and power station was the core of the technical infrastructure at the sanatorium for lung patients in Beelitz, south west of Berlin. Its main features were built between 1898 and 1903 and it was the first district heating power station in Germany. It is considered to be one of the oldest preserved co-generation facilities, formerly combining a district heating plant and electricity works. Form an energy perspective, pioneering plans were realised here: Every single building on the sanatorium grounds was supplied with heat and electricity, hot water and drinking water via an underground network of channels that was more than 10 kilometres long. It is an example of first class engineering at the turn of the century.

From an architectural perspective, the Heiz-Kraft-Werk and its outbuildings are of great significance. The 41 metre high water tower protruding above everything else with its inset chimney is a symbol and landmark for all of Beelitzer Heilstätten. Elements of the country house style from the turn of the century have been elevated to a structural ornamental formation. The octagonal shaft of the water tower is faced with white glazed bricks and the corners and windows are outlined with red clinker brick. Because of the architectural variety and clear love of detail, the Heiz-Kraft-Werk is now a protected monument.

Since 1996, a friends’ association has been dedicated to maintaining this technological monument. The building complex was taken over by the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark. The outer shell was renovated using EU funds. This was followed by the renovation of the technical facilities in stages.

The Heiz-Kraft-Werk can only be visited as part of a tour or on "Open Monuments Day". Guided tours on “History, technology and the future” take place from April to September every last Friday of the month at 2 p.m. (starting from the inner courtyard).
