The Zerbst/Anhalt Town Museum housed in the former Franciscan monastery is more than just a museum of local town history. It plays a central role in the Anhalt (museum) landscape as much religious, intellectual, cultural, political and economic stimulus emanated from medieval Zerbst for the entire region of Anhalt. The refectory and the chapter hall with its ornaments recall the monastery period, the detention room for students with its historic inscriptions from the 17th century remind us of its university history. The presentation of the town's history is closely linked to the Reformation and the education system, and a timeline links the town's history to that of the state of Anhalt and European events up to the present day. The Museum has a satellite building housing its collection “Catherine II“ at Schloßfreiheit 12 (Town Hall).
