In addition to the Francisceum grammar school, the former monastery building also houses the Zerbst/Anhalt town museum, which documents the over 1070-year history of both the town and the Franciscan monastery. The entrance to the museum is in the west wing. The museum’s collections focus on prehistory and early history, the history of the town and especially the history of the Reformation and education in Zerbst and the whole of Anhalt. In addition to the model of the town before its destruction on 16 April 1945, there is also a fascinating documentation on the Anhalt-Zerbst dynasty of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The refectory and chapter house with its ornaments recall the monastery era, while the detention cell with its inscriptions dating back to the 17th century evoke university history. A timeline links the town’s history with that of the state of Anhalt and European events up to the present day.
