The observation tower situated on the 79.8 metre-high Gipsberg hill above Sperenberg provides a magnificent panoramic view to the south towards the village of Sperenberg and over to Lake Krummen See. The Gipsberg hill is historically important because gypsum was mined on the southern slopes of the hill from the 12th century right up to 1958. Many gypsum lakes still testify today to the mining of this important raw material.

The "Boden-Geo-Pfad” geoscientific educational trail leads over the Gipsberg hill and the site of the former open-cast quarry. Information panels provide hikers with information about the geological background, the mining of the gypsum raw material and thus the formation of the gypsum lakes.
